Review

‘‘Since the International Conference held in Biarritz in 1997 on the subject of humour, SIPE, thanks to the generous work of some of its most devout active members, has witnessed several high quality international conferences in Liège, Athens, Belfort and Lisbon. However, in September last year SIPE returned to its southern roots for the opening of its 10th Conference in Toulouse where its headquarters is located and also where most of the Committee members live and work.

One of the founding events which most deserves a mention is the "Confinia Psychopathologica" journal, which was officially presented to conference members by Dr Zoltan Vass, the kingpin of the design and creation of the SIPE journal, and reflecting the vitality of the Budapest team following in the steps of István Hárdi.

The subject chosen, "Love, Unlove", largely contributed to the huge success of the Toulouse conference. Either the participants, who descended on the conference from all four corners of the earth (Ah! The Korean women, the rosebuds of our evenings ...) were moved by their desire to talk about their own experience or they wanted to hear that of the Toulousains, formerly (although a long, long time ago) polite masters of love, with regard to this tragic oscillation at the origin of so many works of art, poems and songs, so many psychological developments and so many dramas, unreasoned impulses and grim bitterness, mad hopes and cruel disappointments.

It all began late on the afternoon of 13 September at the Museum of Medicine, at the Hôtel Dieu Saint- Jacques, in the exact place where over ten years ago, on the initiative of the MGEN-Toulouse, SIPE and SFPE jointly presented "Songs of Creation".

Conference members found themselves at the heart of an exhibition of work created in art therapy environments in both local and regional structures. They were welcomed with a speech by Pr Laurent Schmitt, chairperson, who awarded the Robert Volmat and Gaston Ferdière Prizes to Dr Magdalena Tyszkiewicz, the first and loyal Polish vice-chairperson and Pr Manfred P. Heuser, the eminent neurologist from Munich and German vice-chairperson, who for a long time presided with courtesy, humour and brilliance over the outcome of the German-speaking society.

The reception at the Capitole by a member of the city council, which was keen to be show us its full support, went as far as welcoming us in a hall usually reserved for weddings. This was another occasion to hear speeches by Mr Schmitt and Mr Martineau.

The conference’s first symposia were held at the Rangueil Faculty of Medicine on the morning of Friday 14 September, and lasted until midday on Saturday 15. Over fifty papers were thus presented, including those by new, young contributors who everyone was delighted to welcome and listen to.

On the Friday evening, with the help of the fine weather, the conference delegates met for a river cruise enabling them to discover by night some of the city’s more unusual aspects.

We are all for more international conferences like that of Toulouse because thanks to its voluntary organisers who worked together so efficiently, thanks to its active members and sympathisers who were always available, and finally thanks to the reshuffled committee, and the PR and action policy which the committee intends to pursue and amplify, SIPE-AT envisages the future objectively, and is already looking at organising new conferences and is willing to study participating in common events with other associations, both in France and abroad.’’

Dr Guy Roux, SIPE-AT Honorary Chairman

PS (by the Board): Dr Roux ‘‘forgot’’ to say he was awarded the SIPE Special Prize on 13 September!!!

AGM

It was held on 14 September at 6pm at the Rangueil Faculty of Medicine. The activity report by Pr Schmitt (chairperson) and the financial report by Dr Laharie (treasurer) were unanimously approved. Various issues were then addressed: date and venue of the next conference, website, links to different institutions, committee’s activities … Finally, elections were held to renew the committee (cf. overleaf).

The Conferences in images…

Photos and a film were created with the help of Dominique de Miscault, Jimi Vialaret, Flora Entajan, Patrice Guitar , Jean-Luc Sudres, Karine Guivarc'h et le CSAPA – Maurice Dide (Hôpital La Grave – Toulouse).

THE NEW BOARD

‘‘SIPE has endowed itself with a new board. Like with any new group, certain introductions are required. Our honorary chairman, Dr Guy Roux, has persisted in making SIPE a dynamic and international society. He is one of the pioneers of the psychopathology of expression, and has endeavoured to forge permanent links between SIPE and the national societies from the different countries.

Our vice-chairpersons actively represent the national component of SIPE. Some of them have organised meetings in direct collaboration with SIPE. All enthusiastically develop art therapy and the psychopathology of expression in their respective countries.

Our new secretary general is Prof Jean-Luc Sudres. His research, scientific work and publications are well known. He has made available to SIPE his talent as a lecturer, the quality of his research and his links with several universities and numerous students.

Dr Zoltan Vass, secretary for external relations, is also Professor of Psychology at the University of Karoli Gaspar in Budapest. Besides the numerous books he has written (over 16), Prof Vass is the chief editor of Confinia Psychopathologica and, as such, acts as a permanent interface between SIPE and a scientific journal dedicated to art therapy.

Our treasurer, Mrs Muriel Laharie, ensures that SIPE is never in the red. Thanks to her, the Confinia journal’s digital version is available to members. Mrs Laharie ensures with all her qualities the management of our resources.

Dr Nathalie Bounhoure works at the MGEN out patient unit. Out patient units retain the benefits of institutional psychotherapy and namely, art therapy workshops, which are included in the care programme.

Several of the project managers are brilliant young specialists in training: Etienne Bally, Marie Charras, Sophie Prébois. Their role is to foster the awareness of young colleagues in the psychopathology of expression and art therapy.

Finally, Mi-Yung Martin, our webmaster, provides us essential assistance to help us publish news and acts as an interface with our society’s digital newsletter.’’

Prof. Laurent Schmitt, SIPE-AT Chairman
